As a former Debian user I concur with your opinion Will. But Debian
dist upgrades have always caused problems.
For those who want to stick with Debian based distributions I suggest
that you do the following.
1. Keep a changelog file in your home directory on any custom changes
you have made to any /etc files.
2. Have a backup of /etc and /home as a minimum.
3. With Distribution upgrades I have found through experience that it
is best to do a fresh install.
4. I realize that this is a pain, but always consider the
ramifications of what a distribution upgrade will do.
