I've played a bit with i3.  The problem is that some of those minimalist window managers is that they take the unix philosophy to the max.  That means that the overall UI is split into many components, and each component has one or more config files, and those config files end up all over the place.  So, when you want to add some shortcut, you have to figure out which file it goes in, and what syntax that particular file uses, and so on.  Editing things like this in text files is kinda painful IMO, which is why you get opinionated stuff like this.
