Personally I've been on NameCheap for a long time, but late last year
they were bought by a private equity group and some people are very
worried that will mean the quality of service will erode or pricing
will increase. I'm still very happy there but also keeping an ear open
in case there are changes. At this point, I'd still recommend them and
haven't seen any changes since the PE acquisition. Victor mentioned
their subsidiary spaceship.com which I'll have to look in to.

I consider NameCheap to be very similar to Gandi in the way the
interface operates and their business operations. An Open Source
project I work with has a great relationship with Gandi, but
unfortunately they seem to be pricing themselves out of at least the
personal market.

Any discussion of registrars should probably include a warning to
avoid GoDaddy, although I suspect that doesn't need to be stated to
this audience. The general opinion on GoDaddy seems to be that they
use deceptive renewal rates and aggressive upselling. I did not care
for their interface at all.

Thanks to the previous responses for some great ideas as well, there
are some services there I haven't heard of before.
