Re: [PLUG] [o/t] Pi-hole

I used to run PiHoles (yes multiple) and overall it worked great, though my issue was that I had to be on my VPN to get adblocking when traveling. There's also family/friends involved and supporting VPN for them was less than ideal. Tailscale solves much of that problem, however I ended up switching to NextDNS. While I get that it's not self-hosted, it offers a lot of benefit and uptime I'm willing to "pay for" with my data (and my 20/yr).

I also agree, buying a Pi to run just a PiHole is less than ideal, DNS doesn't take much to run. You could setup a VM or container doing the same thing, would just need it running 24/7.

My only gripe, which they may have fixed by now, is with multiple PiHoles keeping the block lists and allow lists in sync was manual and a pain. One would get out of sync and I'd end up troubleshooting DNS far longer than I should have.

Yeah...that was it. I thought it got rid of ads plus trackers. I'm not a
Nielson family and there's no need to know what I watch.

Thanks for all the great info.
