Re: Computer-related happening (could possibly be Linux-related too....)

Interesting!  I may stop by.

Very likely the computers have windows on them as Microsoft has cheap license for
"certified refurbishers"
P.S.  looks like Tech Exchage is moving to my neighborhood (Fruitvale)

Also Peter Mui has a group called Fixit Clinic and there is an event this Sunday:

WHAT: Fixit Clinic CCCVIII (308) 2018-09-15 San Francisco theshop.build
WHEN: Sunday, Sep 16 1PM-4PM
WHERE: TheShop.build, 926 Howard St, San Francisco, CA 94103 https://theshop.build/

I plan on going.  And I thought some of the gadget-ty folks from Berkeley may be interested.
I have not been to this place "TheShop.build" but seems interesting. Some combo woodworking and machine shop.

There is the Berkeley Tech Fair at the Berkeley Public Library Central Library

Berkeley Tech Fair @Central

Students, seniors, and families are especially invited to this Saturday's Berkeley Tech Fair at the Berkeley Public Library.

The Berkeley Tech Fair is a free event and no registration is required. You will have the opportunity to:

• Interact with local organizations and explore technology learning tools.

• Learn about and sign up for $10/month Internet options.

• Receive a free refurbished desktop computer.  Households receiving HUD housing assistance, CalFresh, SSI, or free/reduced lunch will receive a free refurbished desktop computer. (No Documentation is requested or needed)

This program is a collaboration between The Berkeley Public Library, Tech Exchange, and the City of Berkeley.

The direct Berkeley Public Library event link is https://www.berkeleypubliclibrary.org/events/berkeley-tech-fair-central

The direct link for the Tech Exchange is www.techexchange.org

Again, Berkeley Tech Fair participants can receive a free refurbished desktop computer.  Households receiving HUD housing assistance, CalFresh, SSI, or free/reduced lunch will receive a free refurbished desktop computer.

While the vast majority of those reading this (95%+) have at least one computer, please feel free to pass along this notice to those you know who DON'T yet have a computer at all. After the people who need have finally acquired a desktop computer, then perhaps these selfsame people can be encouraged to install and use a Linux distro on them! :-)
