Philip Fominykh will be giving the following talk this month:

Title: Strings versus Data: Understanding the roles and issues of string data structure

Strings are ubiquitous part of modern programmer's toolbox. as such we don't see the hidden issues associated with strings. Alan Perlis called them "a perfect vehicle for hiding information". The talk is an overview of concerns and issues associated with strings as a way to represent information. The subjects covered will include the historical overview of a the data structure itself, internationalization issues associated with string, and typical anti-patterns. The talk extends on my barcamp presentation "parse, don't sanitize", where i covered some of the issues associated with indiscriminate use of strings. I'll be showing code from public projects, with a focus on Python and Common Lisp.

Thanks.

Aaron
