Wow indeed.  Are those codes  ('&m' and '&d') your picks or are they from C roots?

Nitpicking is this even more ruby-like?

    result.gsub!(/&m/){ "#{month}" }
    result.gsub!(/&d/){ "#{day}" }
    result
end
