Sorry, I should have labeled my question better!  I'm not doing anything 
in Perl, it's all PL/SQL.  :-(

I meant only to ask about the *idea* of:
  ( $keys, @vals )

and how one would correctly refer to this type of thing, as I lack any 
computer science background.
