It's the version of malloc in publib.  It performs some sort of error
checking, and never returns if it can't satisfy the request.  Operates on a
"better the core dump you know than the core dump you don't" principle, I
guess.

You should add "-lpub" to the LIBS section of your makefile.  You might want
to check ("ls /usr/lib/libpub.a") to make sure it's been installed.
