Ick tin. I dont recall netscape doing that to me. I'm pretty sure once
I caught up a group, it stayed that way. Regardless, I dont use it.
I, personally think slrn is one of the nicer news readers for linux.

It handles threads, multipart attached binarys and more importantly it 
has a nice "catchup" feature. Once you catch up a news group, you only 
get new headers from that point on.

Its UI is kinda... well, you'd have to like vi (or maybe emacs) to 
really enjoy it. Its got quite a number of key press combinations,
the man page is required reading. 

The upside is, once you learn it (again, the vi/emacs parallel) you
really start to like it.
