Hm. My version of tin (1.2) doesn't have -Q.
(Was that a joke? Ha ha. :)

I run tin with both -q and -r. I'm not sure
if there are any settings I can tweak on tin to get it
to not continually scan the entire set of newsgroups.
Even though I'm only subscribed to a dozen groups, tin still
keeps records on every newsgroup in the local .newsrc file
that it stores. OpNet has more than 40,000 newsgroups. (!)

The connection to the news server is generally not sluggish,
however, every time tin starts up, and also each time it queries
for new posts, it hangs for a considerable amount of time.
I'm not sure what it's doing during this time, but I'm guessing
that it has something to do with the huge number of groups.
