Re: [Plug] Stallman on NPR

Thanks for telling us. It's pretty interesting. I would've loved to call in. Too bad it's a rebroadcast.

I always thought RMS missed some important points:
1. He's a hacker of considerable skill. Not all of us have enough excess talent and luck to give away all our work and still eat.
2. His analogies and arguments are more twisted than pavorati at a tiny tim concert. I just heard him compare writing proprietary software in making money out of creating software to dumping waste into the environment in making money out of creating paper.
3. He fails to acknowledge the fact that there are some serious Free Software shortcomings, such as the almost complete lack of games. He makes excuses and cites as his examples some highly inferior pieces of software.

I also don't think he's a particular elequent or pursuasive man. He doesn't make a good advocate at all. The whole (GNU/Linux)/Linux thing pisses me off too. The FSF only develops a very small portion of a full Linux dist and a lot of stuff that their name's attached to was contributed by others. It's just shameless credit grabbing. RMS came accross even more petty on the radio than he does in writing and in his actions. He's a great hacker and he's made a good contribution to the Open Source movement and all, but he should've been happy w/ the fame he attained and left it at that. Other people can share some credit too. There's plenty to go around.

BTW, I was impressed. The guy interviewing Stallman correctly used the word hacker!
