If you are using bash, type startx > .xerrors 2>&1 to start the xserver then shut it down. The entire output of the x server startup will be in the file .xerrors . Look at it so see what is really going on. It sounds like X is starting ok but the window manager is getting hung up somewhere. (The wm is not crashing.
