Um, well, they've actually switched over to Windows machines as being the "official" computers now instead of Macs, maybe 2 years ago you had to buy a mac. And most of the korman center has new NT machines, every day I see a big truck stop by and drop off DELL boxes. Everyone in the school gets a shell account, on what I believe is a Sun Enterprise 3000, and also they have some other big machine for the mail server. If you get into the math/compsci department, you get another shell account, on only a Sun Enterprise 450, but there are usually at max 30 people on there during the day, and it's got 4 Ultrasparc II processors, and about a gig of ram, running Solaris 7 (Sorry I had to brag here I was really excited when they upgraded that machine), oh yeah, no quota on this box either :) and the mcs lab has more Sun Ultra 1's than the DELL's running NT and the old macs combined. (Also I think there are some new Ultra 5's and DELL's waiting to be set up in the closet, as of last term) Though alot of the school is still on macs unfortunately because in 1981 when they decided to make everyone get a computer, apple was really the only option. As for the classes, there is actually really only one UNIX class, in the CS dept which is a tad too easy for people who already know unix, but at least I picked up some stuff I wouldn't have learned on my own (sed, awk, scheme, tex, etc) And the textbook for the class was ORA's Unix in a nutshell. (And a C/C++ reference book) Most of the other CS classes are not geared towards unix, or mac, or windows. Since you have a choice of windows or mac "officially" they can't gear it towards one or the other, so you actually learn things that will work on all platforms. Most profs don't care wether you use Metrowerks CodeWarrior (The recommended compiler because it works on both Windows and Mac), MS Visual C++, or gcc/g++, as long as your assignments actually compile on the compiler you've specified. Many of the profs, and students use unix/linux on their personal machines, and they only thing you ever needed mac or windows for before was to use Filemaker Pro software for the coops, but that's been moved over to a web based interface, so nothing really requires you to have Windows or MacOS anymore. Now, I'm not saying Drexel is the place you wanna go to, I just had to defend my school because your statements below are horribly untrue. -- Michelle Weber umweber@mcs.drexel.edu On Tue, 28 Sep 1999, Nick R wrote: > Ack!
