I'm not sure, but I think that the kits you're talking about may be only for networking over a phone line or the power lines in your home. If those are the ones you're talking about, I've heard some not-too-flattering things about the connection speed and reliability, and I'm not sure what protocols they support, and if Linux supports them, or if the software would even run under Linux.
