Go for it! I use it on Linux and regularly exchange documents &
spreadsheets with MS Office97. Not all documents convert 100% but it's
really not a problem, some minor fomatting loss. Does much better
conversions than WP/Office97.
The only downside I see with staroffice is on the Linux side, the font
choices in documents are limited to those supported by the printer
driver. While you can use ttf fonts, you can't always print them.
You can get around the "desktop takeover".
Best of all, it's free, it works and it's not MS!
