Linux and BSD are essentially the same in their firewall implementations. Either way, you're probably talking about just setting up a packet filtering firewall. There's a good faq on firewalls in general here: http://www.interhack.net/pubs/fwfaq/ The firewall howto is nice too. It'll tell you more about using a squid proxy and setting up TIS or a SOCKS proxy. The best thing to do is to see how both systems work. They're pretty similar altho some would argue that *bsd has a much better IP stack than linux.
