[PLUG] debian install two nic

using Debian_version 2.2  installed from the
ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/stable/main/disks-i386/current/.  i
successfully installed the os to ftp and to ping and resolve names.

i am unsuccessful in installing a second 3c509 nic.  i have read the
ethernet how to and have the second card set to disable pnp and an open irq
and i/o.   i have used ifconfig to no avail.

i am looking to install ipmasq on a 486dx and use the machine only in
terminal mode.

dmesg shows the second card as eth1

any help please
