Did you re-run LILO?  I found the instructions that Red Hat gives in their
Users Guide for compiling a kernel to be excellent.  Concise but complete.
Details like pathnames and such will vary with the distribution, but it's
getting all the steps that's important.  It's availabe on their website
somewhere.
