Learn something new every day...<g> Yeah...I use MS products at work....Don't like it...but that's where our product runs. As soon as Kylix is officially released, I look forward to porting this over to Linux. Saw some really good things at the Borland Conference. While they hyped up Kylix, they presented a lot of general and more specialized Linux tutorials like developing Apachi CGI modules and interfacing to InterBase via the IBPerl module. The only really new product they announced was JBuilder 3.5 for Macintosh. Apparently, they are working with Apple to provide a working Java VM for Mac OS/X. They also claim to be the leading Java development tool (IDE-wise, at least) with significant market share. Supposedly, they had over 300K worth of downloads for the free release of JBuilder Foundations (JBuilder on Linux) and then many commercial requests after that. Don't know exactly what they are going to do with Kylix in terms of its licensing. As you know, Kylix is currently Delphi on Linux. They will be releasing C++Builder on Linux as well at the standard and professional package level as seperate products. The Enterprise edition will be released sometime after that and will incorporate both Delphi and BCB along with some other tools. Not sure if they will be releasing the Standard versions as freeware or not. Existing Delphi and BCB users will have some work to do on the port as they will be using the new CLX (Crossplatform Library) on Linux rather than the older VCL (VCL is still OS specific), but they are trying to make that a painless as possible. Their new motto is CROSS PLATFORM rather than being a primarily Windows shop. They are actively targetting VB developers as there is little prospect of MS bringing VB to Linux (at least that is Borland's belief (Yes...they changed their name BACK to Borland...a subsiderary of Inprise Corp)). Borland is also trying to point out that these tools ARE NOT for developing applications and not kernel or device driver development. They point out that there are better tools in the community for this purpose (GCC and vi) and don't want people thinking that they are trying to replace those tools. InterBase is STILL not Open Sourced. Lawyers are supposedly mucking up the works. Little suprise there. But, both sides are saying that it is going to happen. They showed source code for InterBase at the conference, FTWC (for those who care). Well, that's the report on the conference. I knew it, only someone using a microsoft mail client would post something like that to a list :) Double click on the person's name, and it'll show you their email address. ___________________ www.ChaosReigns.com ______________________________________________________________________ Philadelphia Linux Users Group - http://www.phillylinux.org Announcements - http://lists.phillylinux.org/mail/listinfo/plug-announce General Discussion - http://lists.phillylinux.org/mail/listinfo/plug ______________________________________________________________________ Philadelphia Linux Users Group - http://www.phillylinux.org Announcements - http://lists.phillylinux.org/mail/listinfo/plug-announce General Discussion - http://lists.phillylinux.org/mail/listinfo/plug
