Re: [PLUG] two questions (printer and xfree86 4.0) ...

I had the same need, but also wanted duplex. I have a LaserJet IIID which
offers 8ppm, 300x300, and duplex printing on 8.5x11 and legal. It's a
great printer and you should be able to get one in reconditioned shape for
$300 or less. They are around 8 years old. You'll want the full 5MB
memory compliment. I use it with Linux all the time, including as a Samba
share to Windows boxes. I've never had any problems with the filter
changing PostScript to the native HP PDL. The only time I've had any
problem was when I didn't yet have the 4MB add-on card, and I had some
overruns.
If you go to eBay, avoid shipping this thing, as they weigh 80 pounds and
you're guaranteed that UPS will drop them from the highest height they can
find. Go to Second Source or a refurb/used place.
If you don't want duplex, get a LJIII.
Good luck.

I have two questions:
I would like to buy a laser printer that will work well in linux and can
print at least 8ppm. Postscript would be preferable, but I don't care as
long as I can get a good filter. I need to be printing lots of
documentation. Does anyone have any suggestions? Oh yeah, I'm looking to
spend around $400.
Second, am I crazy, or are the xfree86 4.0 debian (woody) packages now
available? I just did 'apt-get dist-upgrade' and what do you know?
