SETI = Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence.

You can have your machine help in analyzing some of the piles of radio/laser
data collected. It's a world-wide, distributed computing effort. So,
SETI@home allows you to help look for aliens from your home.

It's a process that runs in the background. Since 90%+ of all CPUs sit idle
most of their lives, this lets them fill in those empty gaps of time with
useful computing.
