You can have your machine help in analyzing some of the piles of radio/laser data collected. It's a world-wide, distributed computing effort. So, SETI@home allows you to help look for aliens from your home. It's a process that runs in the background. Since 90%+ of all CPUs sit idle most of their lives, this lets them fill in those empty gaps of time with useful computing.
