[PLUG] LDAP, authentication, and user information

I am in the process of designing a networked system for schools. In this
environment, a student would have a student id, username, email, home
directory, and whatever else is useful. My problem seems to be that I want
any student to be able to acess their account at any computer on the
network. At first, I thought I would use NIS, but when I found it was
insecure, I looked at LDAP and the ldap_pam module for authenication.

My question(s) are as follows: Has anyone used either of these systems?
Could you recommend a better alternative? Is an LDAP directory what I want
for this type of information, and which free LDAP server should I use? If
you know or have worked with ldap_pam or an NIS-like system, I would like
to have your advice.

Thanks,
Xtian Betz
