There should be messages in /var/log/messages or /var/log/warn about why the login attempts failed. Unless xdm/kdm is segfaulting or something. That might leave you without a message. /var/log/XFree86.0.log might give some info if there's a problem with KDM starting X-windows. (Have you tried logging in at the text console?
