I am playing with Yellowdog Linux on a Macintosh Powerbook G3 1999

Good for you!

My problem is, the machine is on for about 22 hours each day (depending on
what I am doing) and, during this time, everything is running at full power.
What I want to do (and want to know how to do) is to use the pmud (power
management daemon) to make the drive spin down. I didn't know if anyone has
had any luck with this so far.

What version of YellowDog - 1.x or 2.0? I believe that 2.0 has better support for power management. However, keep in mind that if you've got all sorts of daemon's running, it may simply not be able to spin it down.
