In the sysutils package on Debian, there is a program called "memtest".
It looks like what you're looking for.  The documentation says that the
programs in the package were downloaded from "sunsite.unc.edu:/pub/Linux
and other sources".  I'd try looking at Freshmeat; I got 4 results from
http://freshmeat.net/search/?q=memtest -- two of which look like they'd
be useful for you.
