ssshwwwooooshhh!!!! that the sound of your response flying over my head:) so i guess i need to learn sendmail? isn't notoriously difficult to configure? what are the alternatives? -----Original Message----- From: epike@isinet.com To: plug@lists.phillylinux.org Sent: 10/23/01 11:53 AM Subject: Re: [PLUG] email how-to.. Here's one... Since I'm on cable and my laptop is behind my Linux firewall/gateway/ I've set up my linux box as my outgoing mail. The advantage is (1) outgoing mail is faster since my laptop just drops the mail on the server and the server spools it on its own (2) no cap on outgoing email size. So If I send a 5megs MP3 attachment, my laptop just drops it to the linux box and the linux box might spool and deliver it for a couple of minutes or hours on its own. So I've set up my laptop such that incoming mail (POP server) would still be my ISP (@home.com) and outgoing mail (SMTP) would be my linux box. To pull this off, sendmail should be able to relay but only from select machines ..(that would be the file /etc/mail/access). I can't remember right now what needs to be done in /etc/sendmail.cf or /etc/sendmail.mc though. e pike /JondZ > > i am email challenged and need a good primer on how email works, how to > configure an email client (ie: balsa,KMail, etc) for on a LAN/Internet. can > anyone point me to some books, magazines, how-to's, or short-stories on the > basics of email and how it all works. 4th grade reading level preferred:) > > thanks all > > -chris > > ______________________________________________________________________ > Philadelphia Linux Users Group - http://www.phillylinux.org > Announcements-http://lists.phillylinux.org/mail/listinfo/plug-announce > General Discussion - http://lists.phillylinux.org/mail/listinfo/plug > ______________________________________________________________________ Philadelphia Linux Users Group - http://www.phillylinux.org Announcements-http://lists.phillylinux.org/mail/listinfo/plug-announce General Discussion - http://lists.phillylinux.org/mail/listinfo/plug ______________________________________________________________________ Philadelphia Linux Users Group - http://www.phillylinux.org Announcements-http://lists.phillylinux.org/mail/listinfo/plug-announce General Discussion - http://lists.phillylinux.org/mail/listinfo/plug
