i'm really just looking for general installation and maintenance stats. i'm not even looking into the applications or application support. of course it's more complicated if all existing applications require porting or a linux alternative. however, porting/alternative apps are not necesarily out of the question if it can be shown that long term maintenance is easier and cheaper. If it costs a company $1M to migrate a custom app to linux, but it saves $5M in licensing and support costs over 5 years, then maybe it makes sense to migrate. However, without numbers to show the bean counters, how can you ever prove that point? So, if anyone knows where to get these general purpose numbers, please let me know. I think that some are getting bogged down in specific details of a hypothetical situation. -chris PS- If these numbers don't exist, then the linux community needs to get them. Companies are seriously considering a move to linux (mine anyway) but they need data to backup the rhetoric. -----Original Message----- From: Leonard Rosenthol To: plug@lists.phillylinux.org Sent: 11/13/01 11:27 AM Subject: RE: [PLUG] need stats!! stat! As Leone points out, on the desktop side the MAIN issue that you have to address is your software needs/requirements. If you require MSOffice compatibility, then what will you use on Linux to replace it? What about custom software (like Mike's insurance example)? And if you're running WINE or Win4Lin, then you are still paying for Windows... On the server, it's a LOT easier to justify...UNLESS you've already got a complex solution in place based on ASP and/or COM and it needs to come across. So what I am saying is that the main issue you should be looking is identifying your requirements. Once you've done that, then you have concrete criteria on which you base your evaluation - not just in terms of each item, BUT also transition issues.
