Yeah, I should have mentioned speed is distance from telco dependent...

I had some trouble with the connection disappearing with my initial
setup.  Like you describe, the internet would not be visible through the
router.  In some cases it even seem to lose route to certain
destinations and not others.  It occurred weekly on my initial install,
with power cycling of the router/modem fixing the problem.  I finally
called them and mentioned the problem, and it's been rock solid for ~2
months now.
