I had mentioned that I had installed AIM brand for my daughter. Now, it turns out that this is a great alternative to PA Relay Service in having a "telephone conversation" with a deaf friend.

Is the KDE client or GAIM better?

They did both. GAIM et al have been mentioned to death, but the "official" AIM client for Linux can be found at <http://www.aim.com/get_aim/linux/latest_linux.adp>. That is, if you're interested. :)
