CCIL's dialup logins are done with mgetty and it looks for a ppp
connection first, then if ppp isn't detected you are sent to
mercury.ccil.org via rlogin.  The above error shows you made it to
mercury.

My laptop with working dialup to CCIL doesn't have that uncommmented.
On the server we have:
earth:/home/cp# grep pap /etc/ppp/options
pap-timeout 8

> in pap-secrets I have this line:

I have to check, but you are putting your actual password there?

Have you tried setting up dialup the way mandrake suggests at
