Because potato certainly comes with linux kernel 2.2.20, it supports USB but I believe that all configuration works will be your job. for Journalized fs, There's a few people providing uptodate kernel for potato but if you want what a lot call 'cutting edge software' (others called that unstable) you certainly doesn't want potato. But don't be disapointed to pay for a CD-set of potato, The first CD is a good way to install woody (testing) or sid (unstable). Just install a minimal system with the first CD, then replace 'potato' or 'stable' in your /etc/apt/sources.list by testing (to use the next debian release) or unstable (think about it as CVS) then run 'apt-get update' to update the apt database and then run 'apt-get dist-upgrade'. For your question about the available kernel, debian provides a great tools called kernel-packages which allow you to upgrade your kernel with the last stable one without problem.
