[PLUG] simple linux admin question (i hope)

Hi all,
Ok, so I thought is was kosher to simply add a new group by editing the /etc/group file, but I seem to be having problems. I created and then added myself to a new group. Then I granted group write permission to a directory but was unable to write to that directory. Any thoughts?

More puzzling behavior:

As root, I type:

sudo -u myusername groups

and the new group appears along with myusername!

As myusername, I type

groups

and get only myusername.

Why does it do this? How is sudo -u different from being myself? I'm using RedHat 7.2 if that helps. I know that I'm probably missing something simple, but I'm stumped.

Thanks,
Keith
