It is noted that the Debian system is not the easists to install, but Debian gives you everything with 7 CDs in the Woody distribution. The other commercial distributions are designed for basically setting up a desktop system. If you want to set up a web, ftp, or rsync server you need to fetch the packages off of the web and install them. The beauty of Debian is for the individual who needs, or wants to have a totally customizable system that i designed to be upgradable without problems. Also the Debian system is designed to be free as far as the free software foundation guidelines. The commercial distribution systems are not as strict on the level of freedom. If you are building systems for clients and don't ever want anything to come back to haunt you then the Debian system is the way to go. But if you are a home user setting up a Linux system for the first time then another distribution could be your best bet. It all boils down to what you really want to do with the system and how much you will depend upon system upgrades not breaking the system on you. My experience is that the Debian system is the safest bet if you depend upon upgrading the distribution from time to time. How free do you want the system to be? Are you concerned about any propritary software in the distribution? Are you concerned about the licensing of the distribution? These are the questions that need to be answered in choosing the distribution that is right for you. Mike Leone wrote: > > Anybody else seen this?
