Switch back to the console; use <ctrl>-<alt>-Fn, where n is the virtual console number you wish to use (it's just like switching from one VC to another except you add a <ctrl> key to the mix). Start X with "startx -- :1.0". "--" indicates that following options are passed to the X server rather than being interpreted as an argument to xinit, and ":1.0" means use display 1 (as opposed to display 0, which is default) on localhost (it's not specified; localhost is the default). Or did you try just doing a straight "su user"? I can't help with KMail; I don't use it.
