Why log out?

In addition to suggestions that other people made, you can fire up a
second X session without logging out of your first. Switch back to the
console; use <ctrl>-<alt>-Fn, where n is the virtual console number you
wish to use (it's just like switching from one VC to another except you
add a <ctrl> key to the mix). Start X with "startx -- :1.0". "--"
indicates that following options are passed to the X server rather than
being interpreted as an argument to xinit, and ":1.0" means use display
1 (as opposed to display 0, which is default) on localhost (it's not
specified; localhost is the default).

Or did you try just doing a straight "su user"?

I can't help with KMail; I don't use it. Did you try the help?
