Well, I had an eMachines (yeah, I know) as my primary computer for about two years and the fan in the power supply started failing. (It made a horrible racket which would go away when I bumped the top of the case.) The case itself would get really hot and then the whole machine would shut down. The only way that I found to get it started again was to unplug the power supply from the motherboard and plug it back in. I got a new power supply[1] and the problems went away, although I still experienced stability problems, probably due to intermittent component failure caused by the excessive heat. Does your machine get really hot? That might be the problem. [1] Ordered it from PC Power & Cooling. It still works, although I haven't had that machine powered up for a long time (because of the stability issues). <rant> Side note (gripe): eMachines' OEM parts distributer's site (they currently link to pcfactoryoutlet.com; I think that's the same one as before) had horrible issues with Netscape 4.7x (which is what I was using at the time). Totally unusable; it relied on JavaScript for navigation, adding-to-basket, and such. Even when I turned JavaScript on, it was still broken in Netscape. I got frustrated and found pcpowercooling.com. It was operable, if a little clunky (strictly usability issues, but perfectly functional). In a way, the first site did me a great favor because I saved money. :) (Current prices for the part are $60 for an eMachines OEM power supply for the machine in question vs. $40 for PC Power & Cooling, which is what I think it was (or close to it) when I bought the silly thing.) </rant> -- Bill Jonas * bill@billjonas.com * http://www.billjonas.com/ Developer/SysAdmin for hire!
