I share your frustration. Having just got a company laptop last summer it was relatively easy to get Linux installed but of course we could never get the money back for the unused Win98 software. Then, when I wanted to diagnose a suspected network card problem the IBM support people told me that I'd have to un-install the Linux and the W2K and restore the Win98 before they could help me! Why don't you search out a reasonable used laptop? Since the software license expires when the hardware is sold (AFAIK) the version of win-whatever still on the box is void anyway. They are not as nice as the new ones but some decent deals can be found (ebay? Tiger direct? others?). You don't have to pay for a "warranty" or "support" with a used one so the price should reflect that. With a new one, if you install the Linux yourself then you're probably out of luck when it comes to getting support anyhow. Good luck.
