If you have problems running X while gpm is running (some hardware
doesn't like it if you have the mouse device open multiple times) but
still want to run gpm and X at the same time, you can set up gpm to
repeat the mouse movements to /dev/gpmdata and tell X to use that device
instead of your normal mouse device.
