Re: [PLUG] OS choice

This depends exactly on your purpose for wanting to learn linux, is it just
so you can set up a server to develop your website on? Or do you actually
want to learn the system? If it's just for your website, get mandrake 8.1,
you have easily have that install apache, php, mysql, perl, etc, and it will
be all set up for you, and ready to go. There is even a gui interface to
setting up virtual hosts. So if installing this system is just for creating
your website, I have to recommend mandrake.

If you actually are interested in learning linux however, install something
like slackware, do everything you can in the shell, try to avoid X at all
costs. I recommend before anything you learn shell basics, just the basic
commands, editing files using vi, etc. Whenever I'm new to something, I
always like picking up a book, I would recommend the book Running LInux, it
covers an exellent range of material, when completed, you'll have your feet
wet in just about every area. After you get used to things, start reading
some online documentation, man pages, especially HOWTO's. There is a great
site, www.linuxdoc.org that has tons of great documentation.

Hope this helps!
