Hello all, Thanks for the input on choosing an operating system. As far as where I'm at, I started with Windows and have become quite fluent from 3.1 to 95 to 98se to 2000 to NT, etc. etc. I built computers over the summer for myself and friends so I covered hardware (which was a lot of fun). I previously worked on and developed http://www.sportsofsorts.com as a project when I knew little of website managment except for a simple personal page noone knew about. I learned a ton using tables and graphics , changing servers and dns, using a shopping cart (Cart32) and most importantly working with real people at a real bussiness. By the way I'm only 16 so if this doesn't impress you, it shouldn't. Anyway, I haven't worked on the website for a while and while I was doing it I found PERL which I started writing scripts in windows to autmate the website. I designed a basic cart and had the script dynamically build the website from html fields. The script would promt the user for say "Title" and then it would write the html to but the new title in the page. I researched certificates and credit card verification and databases to store the page information. As far as what I have to show for it, nothing. The script is simple and not complete. plus I saw a cart project in linux that is free (go figure) I started with Linux to possible host the website, learn Linux, use it instead of windows at home, and finish developing the website. I started with FreeBSD because my friends were using it. They tryed installing it on an old computer at school and were unsuccesfull due to ftp network restrictions. I looked it up and started to use it. But soon I found Redhat which might be easier to learn. So now I'm wondering is there better? Mandrake, from what I heard, seems like a more user friendly Redhat, which I don't need. If all these operating systems are Linux based, then is basic configuration like networking the same? Which would be best to learn on and where else can I go to read doc. I hope this answers some of msimons@slackware.com questions and I'll look at irc. Thanks to all!
