How did you fix this problem

Since you're running 2.4.16, my suggestion is not going to be much use: upgrade to a recent kernel. By searching lkml I see several reports of that error in single CPU, highmem situations with recent kernels recently.

For what it's worth, I've been running 2.4.17 on a 2 processor, 1GB ram, PIII without incident for a while now (fingers crossed), so you must be hitting something that my config wouldn't.
