I am aware that asymetric ciphers bloat up the size of the ciphertext, but I thought this wasn't a problem with symetric ciphers. And, because you're putting the server on the other end under a lot of stress for no good reason. Which sometimes doesn't matter and sometimes *really* pisses people off. (Around here, if Oracle can't have all of the processor most of the time, clients get pissy.)
And wastes more time. What makes you think the error-correction provided by TCP is insufficient? There is a server at my old school where I regularly get MAC errors when copying files with scp. Of course, Earlham has a really shitty net connection... -- Will Dyson
