The idea isn't original to me, but it is too much fun not to share.

You can change the ready message displayed in the LCD of HP laserjet 
printers by sending a PJL (HP's command set for printer-specific commands) 
command. The form of the message is this:

<ESC>%-12345X@PJL JOB RDYMSG DISPLAY = "message"

I like to set the ready messge to be "Insert Quarter", "Game Over", or 
something similarly whimsical. The behavior of the printer is not affected 
aside from the message displayed (and a power cycle resets it).
