Hello fellow PLUGgers ! Tried rebooting with the Linux bootable floppy - Lo ! and Behold ! The CDWriter SW212 got autodetected and now works fine. Of course, Fred would say to leave the computer on forever, but out here in the wilderness (Berwyn) we still have thunderstorms. So the question remains - is it a hardware or software problem ? And will the CD drive disappear again if I reboot from the hard drive ? My next step will be to attempt a CD-R burn. Wish me luck.
