Re: [PLUG] AbiWord 1.0.1 Released

Greg Lopp:

nope. I was going to suggest that myself, but when I went to
test OpenOffice 1.0, it quietly ignored attempts to open the only
WPD I had to check against.

OpenOffice is still working on filters for WordPefect files, and a word of warning, there are at least three common formats that use WPD as a suffix, WordPerfect 5.0, 5.1, and the 6/7/8/9/ format. What was equally ironic was that the Windows version of StarOffice 5.2 opened WPD files but the Linux version didn't, so it's been quite some time since Star and now the folks at OpenOffice.org have had notice of the problem.
Novell, and WordPerfect before also made no secret of the format necessary to deal with the forms and anyone who wanted could have written a filter as at least one source did for microsoft. SGML and XML are better formats for openness and fortunately finally XML seems to be catching on.

One other point if you're desperate, the WP8 linux version which was available for download free was quite able to open and deal with any known WPD format, and also export to some other format. It's probably still floating around on some servers, and Corel still allows copies to be registered. Unfortunately it requires libc5 and other now outdated libraries.
