Actually, when you stripe data in a RAID configuration, you increase
your throughput for reading and decrease your total throughput for
writing.  You have two drives working in parallel to read, so it goes
faster.  With writing, you have to wait for both drives to move the
heads and turn the platters to the correct position, then you have to
wait for the confirmation.  With reading, the drives just send you data
as fast as they can get it and the OS (if it's software) or the RAID
card (if it's hardware) puts the bits into the correct order.
