| Local mail delivery requires no MTA, only an MUA, and sendmail is a | perfectly functioning MUA. Local mail delivery requires no MUA, only an MTA and MDA. sendmail is an MTA. | (The fact that it's not running as a daemon just means its not | listening for connections on any kind of network connection. Sending | mail just execs sendmail, which delivers mail into /var/mail.) sending mail execs sendmail, which execs an MDA (such as mail.local) which delivers mail into /var/mail. Glossary: MDA - Mail Delivery Agent. mail software that performs final delivery. eg. mail.local, deliver, qmail-local, procmail MTA - Mail Transport Agent. mail software that moves mail from one place to another. often invoked by an MUA. will generally cause either another MTA (on another system) or an MDA (for final delivery) to run. eg. sendmail, qmail MUA - Mail User Agent. mail software that interacts with a user. eg. mail, mutt, elm MBA - Master of Business Administration. Either a degree granted by an academic institution or a person holding such a degree. the latter is a often a cause of mail delivery failure. eg. I read about Exchange in Dr. Dobbs, I'm going to install it on the mail server, show me how to log on. --jeff ______________________________________________________________________ Philadelphia Linux Users Group - http://www.phillylinux.org Announcements-http://lists.phillylinux.org/mail/listinfo/plug-announce General Discussion - http://lists.phillylinux.org/mail/listinfo/plug
