RE: [PLUG] Verizon DSL software for RedHat Linux 7.2

The only problem with this that I can see right now is that I do not believe
that you have a username and password until you go through the whole set-up
process (but, don't mark me on that, it has been over a year and I've only
done it once). I might be wrong, but, I don't know how Verizon handles it
(they might have a temp username/password that is automatically entered).

Grr, I wish I had paid closer attention. Once you have it past this point,
it is very easy to use whatever OS you wish.

Long story short, you need a username and password to get the PPPoE stuff to
work. You don't get a username and password until you run through Verizons
set up process (if anyone has done this in the past year, your knowledge is
more up to date than mine). Sort of a whole Catch-22 situation. Easiest
way it to bribe the person with the windows laptop to let you run through
the set up on. That is my opinion. It is a verizon thing.

If you check the system requirements at

http://www.verizon.net/getdsl/requirements.asp

you can see that they don't support anything other than Windows and MacOS.
So, their software will presumably only run on Windows and MacOS. To me, it
looks like the quickest way to get you on your DSL is to just use a windows
machine to run the set up, then, configure RedHat for PPPoE. This part I
don't know, I have never used a Linux PPPoE client. Side note, the one
provided by verizon for windows, WinPoet, isn't all that great.

The tech I talked to said something about *not* using their install disk,
but
using programs I could download.

If I hafto, I can put Windows back on the Micron box or offer dinner to
someone
with a Windows laptop to come in and do the initial things.
