- old-fashioned wire (analog) from your home to the CO.

- old-fashioned wire to a device called a SLC[1] then digital to the CO.
  in which case, you will not qualify for DSL, and your modem connect

[1] Subscriber Loop Carrier. pronounced "slick". sometimes called a DLC,
    (Digital Loop Carrier). A phone line multiplexer. generally located in
    a small hut, cabinet, or underground vault.
