Fred K. Ollinger: Can you run another wm instead of kde? You can still run kde apps in another wm, and you might not need all the features of kde. If you do need all of kde then ignore this. Doesn't running most KDE apps actually load part or much of KDE, lessening any value in running KDE apps in another wm. I used to be foolish enough to use my 486 with various and sundry things like windowmaker, nice concept but slow. In fact, one thing I noticed was that NetBSD actually is faster on my 486 than Linux most of the time, I haven't quite figured out why.
